Phonics at Cranford Primary School:
At Cranford Primary School, we use the Bug Club Phonics programme to provide a structured and engaging approach to teaching early reading and spelling skills.
Phonics is taught daily through a dedicated 20-minute lesson, ensuring that all pupils develop confidence in recognising sounds, blending words for reading, and segmenting words for spelling. Teachers use the high-quality resources provided by the Bug Club Phonics programme to support learning during whole-class phonics sessions and targeted intervention groups.
In our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), phonics learning extends beyond timetabled lessons. Children are encouraged to apply and develop their phonics knowledge through carefully planned activities and continuous provision within the learning environment. This enables pupils to practise and embed their skills in meaningful and engaging ways throughout the school day.
To support learning at home, pupils are allocated Bug Club e-books each week that link directly to the sounds and letter patterns taught during their phonics lessons. Every child is provided with a personal login, allowing them to access Bug Club books on a computer, tablet, or other device. In addition, pupils receive physical reading books to help consolidate their phonics knowledge and develop fluency and confidence in reading.
Our aim is to foster a love of reading while equipping every child with the phonics knowledge and skills they need to become successful, confident readers.
